Slayr Boston reviews
Disappointed
Fantasia's singing was top-notch during the second act, despite a muffled microphone. The lighting throughout the play was consistently off, leaving faces in the dark during critical scenes. Some actors hesitated before delivering jokes, and the sound often echoed during key performances. Although many performances were good, the production lacked the heart and conviction expected from Alice Walker's story. I've seen 5 shows at the Pantages and enjoyed them all, but this one was riddled with disappointments. The audience chatter during the play initially seemed annoying but eventually became quite enjoyable, creating a vibe reminiscent of a gospel meeting. It felt like I was watching a very "average" community theater performance on opening night, which turned out to be a sold-out show. I want actors to perform as if they are living in the moment, but it didn't seem professionally aligned with the actors.
